Baroque violin superstar Rachel Podger and friends explore music by Telemann, Biber, Froberger and more: music from the outer limits of the Baroque imagination.

The Programme

They called it the stylus phantasticus – an approach to composition with no hold barred. Baroque composers like Biber, Froberger, Veracini and Telemann let their imaginations run wild: this is chamber music without limits, and more than three centuries later these ear-dazzling showpieces for violin still demand a player of supreme skill, with an imagination to match.

The Performers

Enter Rachel Podger – the woman who’s been called the queen of the Baroque violin. For Gramophone magazine Podger is a glorious example of someone who lives her life through her violin: today, with two equally gifted and committed colleagues, she’ll show you why.

There is probably no more inspirational musician working today than Podger.’ – Grampohone

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
