German romantic songs by Brahms, Strauss, Mahler and Berg: tiny worlds of emotion, recreated by mezzo Catriona Morison and pianist Malcolm Martineau.

The Programme

Strauss, Mahler and their contemporaries astonished audiences with their colossal orchestral scores. But there was another, even more magical side to their genius – the world of German song, where impassioned poetry and delicate emotion combined to create exquisite miniature dramas of love, longing and loss.

The Performers

There’s no better guide to that world than Catriona Morison – the wonderful Scottish mezzo who scooped the song prize (as well as the overall title) at the 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She’s joined at the piano by Malcolm Martineau, one of the world’s leading interpreters of this extraordinary, endlessly subtle music. Expect emotional drama, and melodies that pierce straight to the heart.

Brighter than the purest stream, is the glint of tear-filled eyes … – Richard Strauss, from Lieder Op 15

Recorded for future broadcast by BBC Radio 3
